Lady Liberty
She stands there like an angel,
Opening the golden gate for me.
A chance for hope, a better life,
A chance for opportunity.
She is my welcome mat,
Welcoming me from a long, hard day.
Telling me I am home,
And giving me a place to pray.
This must be paradise,
My heaven on Earth.
Where I am not judged,
And my life is given worth.
She opened the door wide,
And now I am free.
Where I don’t have to hide,
And I can be true to me.
About “Lady Liberty”
I had to write this poem when taking my Academic U.S. History course in high school. We were given a page that had a Statue of Liberty on it and told to write a poem as if we were an immigrant coming to the United States and seeing that Statue of Liberty for the first time. This is what I came up with…maybe kind of corny?
